What Invisalign can correct

Invisalign can help with

  • Crowded or overlapping teeth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Many bite problems, such as overbite, underbite, crossbite and open bite, depending on how severe they are
  • Teeth that have moved again after braces
  • Teenagers whose permanent teeth are coming through, and adults of any age

When braces may suit you better

  • Very complex bite or jaw problems
  • If wearing aligners for 20–22 hours a day would be hard for you
  • Some younger children, where early treatment with appliances works better

Not sure? Your orthodontist will tell you honestly at your consultation, and explain the options. Compare braces and aligners.

How Invisalign works at House of Tooth

Your treatment, step by step

Step 1

Consultation and 3D scan

Your orthodontist examines your teeth and bite and takes an iTero 3D digital scan instead of impressions.

Step 2

Your digital plan

Your treatment is planned on screen, tooth by tooth, and you see your planned result before you start.

Step 3

Your aligners

Small tooth-coloured attachments may be added to help the aligners grip, and teeth may be gently polished (IPR) to make space. You change to a new set of aligners about every 1–2 weeks, as your orthodontist advises.

Step 4

Review visits

You come in for check-ups so we can see that your teeth are moving to plan. If the final details need a little more work, refinement aligners are made.

Step 5

Keep your new smile

Retainers hold your teeth in their new position after treatment.

Why the iTero scan matters

The iTero scanner takes a precise 3D picture of your teeth in minutes, with no impression material in your mouth. The same scan is used to plan your aligners and to show you how your teeth are expected to move.

During your treatment

Invisalign do’s and don’ts

Do

  • Wear your aligners 20–22 hours a day, including at night
  • Take them out to eat or drink anything except plain water
  • Brush and floss before you put them back in
  • Rinse your aligners and clean them gently every day
  • Keep them in their case whenever they are out of your mouth
  • Change to the next set on the schedule your orthodontist gives you
  • Carry your case and a travel toothbrush when you go out
  • Wear your retainers after treatment, as advised

Don’t

  • Don’t eat with your aligners in
  • Don’t drink tea, coffee, juice or soft drinks with them in
  • Don’t wrap them in a tissue or napkin; it is the easiest way to lose them
  • Don’t clean them with hot water, which can bend them out of shape
  • Don’t chew gum or smoke while wearing them
  • Don’t skip a set or move ahead faster than advised
  • Don’t leave them out for long stretches; teeth can move back

Questions patients ask

Invisalign FAQs

Most cases take 12–18 months, and minor corrections can finish in 4–6 months. In our own case studies, a 14-year-old finished in 9 months and an adult with crowding in 14 months. Your timeline depends on how far your teeth need to move and how consistently you wear your aligners. More on Invisalign timelines.
Most people feel only mild pressure for a few days after changing to a new set of aligners. This is a sign the aligners are working, and it usually settles quickly.
20–22 hours a day. Take them out only to eat, drink anything other than water, and brush your teeth.
Yes. Take your aligners out to eat, so there are no food restrictions. Drink only plain water while wearing them, and brush before putting them back in.
Yes. Our case studies include patients aged 12 and 14. For younger children we first check whether their jaws and teeth are ready, and sometimes early treatment with appliances works better. When should a child start orthodontic treatment?
Attachments are small tooth-coloured bumps bonded to some teeth so the aligners can grip and move them accurately. IPR (interproximal reduction) is gentle polishing between some teeth to make a little space. Both are planned in advance and explained to you.
Not usually. Many cases are treated without extractions; for example, our adult crowding case was aligned without removing any teeth. Your orthodontist will tell you after your assessment. When extractions may be needed
Yes. Teeth naturally tend to drift back, so retainers keep your new smile in place. How long to wear retainers
Yes. Many patients travel to us. Send us photos of your teeth on WhatsApp and we will tell you what your case is likely to need and how many visits to plan for.
