Can You Drink Tea or Coffee with Invisalign? The Chai Rules

Take your aligners out before you drink tea with Invisalign, or coffee, or anything except plain water. Hot chai can warp the plastic, tea and coffee stain it, and the sugar in your cup gets trapped against your teeth. You don’t have to give up your morning chai. You just need a routine.

This is one of the first questions our Invisalign patients in Pune ask, so here are the simple rules.

Why not drink tea with Invisalign in?

Heat. Aligners are made of thin, precise plastic. Hot drinks can soften and slightly distort it. Even a small change in shape means the aligner no longer presses on your teeth as planned, which can slow treatment.

Staining. Tea and coffee contain dark pigments that cling to the plastic. Within days, the aligners can look yellow or cloudy, which defeats the point of clear braces.

Sugar. Indian chai usually has sugar and milk. With aligners in, that sweet liquid seeps under the plastic and sits against your teeth for hours. Saliva can’t wash it away, so the risk of cavities rises sharply.

Align Technology, the company that makes Invisalign, gives the same advice: cool or room-temperature plain water is the only drink to have with your aligners in.

How to drink tea with Invisalign: the routine that works

  1. Take your aligners out and put them straight into their case. Never wrap them in a tissue; that’s how they get thrown away.
  2. Enjoy your tea or coffee. Try to finish it within a reasonable time rather than sipping for an hour.
  3. Rinse your mouth with water, or better, brush your teeth.
  4. Put the aligners back in.

The key is the time limit. Invisalign works when you wear your aligners 20 to 22 hours a day. If every cup becomes a long break, the hours add up and treatment can take longer. Our guide on how long Invisalign takes explains why wear time matters so much.

What about other drinks?

Drink Aligners in? Tip
Plain water (cool or room temperature) Yes Drink plenty through the day
Chai, coffee, green tea No Take them out, rinse after
Hot water, kadha, soup No Heat can warp the plastic
Nimbu pani, juice, cold drinks No Sugar and acid get trapped against teeth
Sparkling water Better out Acidic, especially flavoured versions
Milk, lassi, buttermilk No Rinse before putting aligners back
Alcohol No Often sugary or coloured; rinse well afterwards

Can I drink with a straw?

A straw with aligners in still lets sugar and colour reach your teeth. So it doesn’t solve the main problem. Take them out for anything other than water.

Many cups a day? Plan around meals

If you drink several cups of tea a day, plan your tea with Invisalign around meals and snacks. You’re taking your aligners out to eat anyway, so have your chai then, brush, and put them back. That way you keep the number of breaks low and the hours high.

Keeping your aligners clear

  • Rinse aligners in cool water every time you take them out.
  • Brush them gently with a soft toothbrush, morning and night. Use cool water and a little clear, unscented soap. Toothpaste is abrasive and can make them cloudy.
  • Never use hot water to clean them.
  • Brush your teeth before putting aligners back, especially after sweet chai.

If an aligner stays stained or cloudy, don’t worry too much. You change to a new set every week or two, depending on your plan.

What if I drank tea with my aligners in?

Once won’t ruin your treatment. Take them out, rinse the aligners in cool water, brush your teeth and put them back. If an aligner looks bent or no longer fits snugly, call us before moving to the next set.

Is it the same for braces?

With fixed braces, you can drink tea and coffee normally, because there is nothing to remove. However, tea, coffee and haldi can stain the clear ties on ceramic braces. Our post on self-ligating braces explains why some patients choose brackets without ties. To compare the two treatments, see Invisalign vs braces.

Common questions

Can I drink cold water with Invisalign in? Yes. Cool or room-temperature plain water is fine at any time.

Can I drink black coffee without sugar with aligners in? It’s still best to take them out. Black coffee stains the plastic, and hot coffee can warp it.

Will drinking tea with Invisalign stain my teeth? It can, if tea sits under the aligners. Rinsing or brushing before putting them back prevents this.

Can I chew gum with Invisalign? Not with the aligners in. Gum sticks to the plastic.
